The Terra Cotta Warriors were so interesting to me that I didn't even mind when our lunch stop was at a place that both served food and, naturally, had a jade shop.  It was to be expected, I guess, and I did buy a few small things to remind me of the trip.  We had the late afternoon to ourselves back at the hotel and then some of us took the optional excursion to the Tang Dynasty Dinner & Show while others had dinner and went back to the hotel.

Our dinner featured Cantonese cuisine that we enjoyed before the show started.  While we may not have liked everything that was served, there were lots of different dishes and everyone was able to find something to enjoy.  Then it was time for the show.

Mei-niang, born 624 AD, is central figure in this drama.  When she was a teenager she became a concubine of the Taizong Emperor but when he died, she was sent to a nunnery.

While living at the palace she had known the man who would become Emperor Gaozong and once he became emperor, she became his first wife.  Once he died in 690 AD, she became Empress Wu Ze-tian.

Her story unfolds over five acts from being selected as a concubine as a teen to her ascention to the throne in her 60s.  There is lots of dancing and some amazing costumes.

This was an educational and entertaining way to top off our day in Xi'an.
