The Hilton Munich Airport

While I like to be thorough with my hotel reviews, this one is not particularly in-depth.  We arrived late on Monday evening and had a very early flight back to Madrid so we did little more than sleep and clean up here.  Since our flight was so early - a 7:30 AM international flight meant we needed to check our luggage by 5:30 AM - we had decided a paid stay at a hotel in the airport would be the way to go.  That way we could squeeze every minute of sleep out of the evening.

We took the train from the Hauptbahnhof across the street from the hotel to the Munich airport.  It seemed like a long ride and it's about 45 minutes with all the stops.  Depending on the time of day you're traveling it may be faster to take a taxi as Google maps indicates it's about a 30-35 minute drive.

Upon arriving at the airport we followed the signs to the hotel.  While the signs were easy to follow, it was not a short walk.  Fortunately we have rolling luggage!

Eventually we came to this brightly-lit hall.  We went through the doors at the end and up one level to find ourselves in the main lobby of the hotel.  It was very quiet at 8 PM on a Monday night though we did have to wait for one person to complete their business at the front desk before we could check in.  The friendly associate recognized our Gold status and told us about the breakfast but, wouldn't you know it, we'd be leaving too early to enjoy that benefit.

I didn't get a photo of the lobby and what I really remember about it was that it was cavernous and dark.  Seeing this rendering from the Hilton website makes me think my memory was accurate.  It was dark at 8 PM when we arrived and still dark when we left about 5:15 AM so with all this glass it's no wonder it was a bit dark inside as well.

Our room was in what was either a new wing of the hotel or a newly renovated wing.  In either case we had to walk a long way to get to the elevator, going past several conference rooms on the way.  We weren't very sure we were headed the right direction until we encountered another American who assured us we were fine and were indeed on the right path.

When we reached our floor I immediately loved the decor as its neutral tones and light wood colors reminded me of the Danish modern look I love.

Even though we paid cash, we were not upgraded and got the twin room we reserved.  Though I guess if the upgrade had been to a room with a single king bed we were just as happy where we were.  For no more time than we spent in the room it was fine.  The hotel scores points with me for having dual nightstands and several outlets by each along with a reading lamp.

If it were daylight and you are an av geek you might have enjoyed the view of the airport but by this point of the trip we were too tired to appreciate any unusual aircraft that may have been parked outside.  A comfortable chair was beside the window along with a small table.

Across from the bed near the window was the desk and it had a flip-up compartment that covered a number of easily-accessible outlets.

The TV was wall-mounted over the mini-bar cabinet.  Coffee and tea supplies were on top and inside the cabinet was the mini-fridge with its beverages.  Though ours was a connecting room we never heard any noise from the room next door.

Though the hotel offered an electronic thermostat, we must have been doing something wrong in operating it.  You can see it's set to 18C which is about 66F but we were both hot all night long.  (Because of course they only had duvets and no top sheets we could use to layer!)

The bathroom was quite wide and had the sink and counter on the wall shared with the outside hallway.  I liked the amount of available storage both on the counter and the shelf underneath.

Hilton's traditional Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries were offered.

The toilet was against the wall to the next room.

The (fully-enclosed, hooray!) shower stall was on the near end of the counter area.

The wardrobe looks quite large from the outside but when you open it up you can see that half the hanging space is taken by the safe and a set of drawers.  If two people had a lot of items to hang it could get crowded inside.  On the other hand, actually having drawers is nice compared to some of the other places we stayed on this trip.

I did not check out the 24-hour fitness center, the heated indoor pool, the restaurant or the bar but these amenities are available.

As you might imagine, we were able to check out very quickly at 5:15 the next morning.

Wrap-Up

We got a clean, quiet room for our money and got to sleep a few extra minutes compared to what we would have done if we'd stayed in the city for the night.  It's not a cheap hotel but it was worth it to us.

Our AIM trip was complete.  We enjoyed three different countries in two weeks and saw a wide variety of historical and natural sites along the way.  That makes it a great vacation to me!
